What is Casual Day?

Casual Day is a FUNdraising project benefiting persons with disabilities. Each year they call upon South Africans to dress differently on the first Friday of September and to wear the Casual Day sticker to show their support for disabled people.

Casual Day is South Africa's foremost fundraising event of this nature and raises more than just money it raises awareness about persons with disabilities, opportunities for corporate comradeship, community support and welfare organisation participation.

Bafana v/s Niger

Bafana Bafana begin their 2012 AFCON adventure this Saturday, the 4th of September, as the Pitso Mosimane managed team host Niger in their first qualifying fixture of Africa’s elite tournament.

Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium will entertain the two African teams and the South African national team will expect the local fans to fill the stadium and help spur the team to victory, with their ever-present vuvuzelas.

Bafana Bafana currently ranked 66th on FIFA’s official rankings will be expected to defeat West Africa’s Niger, as the 145th FIFA ranked team has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup or the AFCON.

Niger have drawn their last two matches with a 1-1 scoreline against Chan a 0-0 against fellow West Africans, Benin.

End of the line for illegal Zim

The government has decided to stop allowing Zimbabweans to stay in the country temporarily without proper travel documents. It was announced at a Cabinet briefing yesterday that the decision was taken in order to legitimise the estimated 3 million Zimbabweans living in the country illegally, many with fake South Africa identity documents.

It will allow them time to obtain passports, work or study permits, as well as other documents that will permit them to be in the country legitimately. But if they don't get them by the end of the year, they will be sent packing.

However the Cabinet's decision means that Zimbabweans living, working and studying in South Africa will have to apply for the necessary documentation from Zimbabwe and then apply to the South African Department of Home Affairs for work or study permits before the end of the year, or face deportation.

T.I & his wife bust for dope

Los Angeles sheriff's deputy Mark Pope say Rapper T.I. and wife Tameka Cottle have been arrested in West Hollywood on drug charges.

Police says the arrests for possession of a controlled substance came late yesterday night during a traffic stop, when officers smelled alleged marijuana smoke coming from their vehicle.

He says the 29-year-old T.I and Cottle, a 36-year-old singer, were booked at the West Hollywood sheriff's station and bail was set at $10,000.

Teachers’ salary slips disprove pay claims

Eastern Cape teachers have laughed off adverts published by government which show salary scales of educators as being far higher than what they actually earn. The government claims a newly qualified teacher with a four-year degree earns, on average, a total annual package of R229 790.

However a 46-year-old East London teacher with 15 years’ experience has shown that his total package – including housing, pension and allowances – is R146 000 a year. He takes home R9300 a month. The teacher, who asked for anonymity, has a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in maths and geography. He described the department’s claims as “rubbish”.

“I don’t feel appreciated by the department at all. I’m frustrated and cannot even provide for my family.” The father of three children said he had simply had enough. He has listed a R5000 bond, R2800 in car installments and R2400 a month in school fees at Stirling High School as some of his monthly payments. With no post-matric qualification, his wife earns more than he does, working at a bank.

Spring is one of the four temperate seasons, the transition period between winter and summer. Spring and "springtime" refer to the season, and broadly to ideas of rebirth, renewal and regrowth.

The specific definition of "spring" as a season differs, however, among scientific disciplines such as astronomy and meteorology, and in cultural and human terms. As it refers to climate and the Earth's tilt relative to the sun, spring days are close to 12 hours long with day length increasing as the season progresses.

Spring, when defined in this manner, can start on different dates in different regions. In terms of complete months, in most North Temperate Zone locations, spring months are March, April and May (Summer is June, July, August; autumn is September, October, November; winter is December, January, February).

The vast majority of South Temperate Zone locations will have opposing seasons with spring in September, October and November.

Khumalo set to play for English football club

Bafana Bafana star defender Bongani Khumalo is expected to join leading English Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

Khumalo's business manager Glyn Binkin said "He impressed Spurs when he went to London for a short trial with Spurs last week and the club are keen to sign him."

Khumalo said he was excited about the prospect of playing in the most competitive league in the world. "I enjoyed my trial with Spurs and all I can say is that at this stage the deal is pending and an announcement will be made later."

Motor dealerships downed tools

Members of the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) working at petrol stations, workshops and motor dealerships downed tools, a union official says. Numsa spokesman Castro Ngobese "Nothing has changed.

The strike is going ahead." He said it was impossible to say how many members were involved, but explained the union had 70,000 members across the country working in this sector. They work as fuel attendants, or in workshops, dealerships and engineering, among others.

Talks were continuing with the Retailers Motor Industry (RMI) and Fuel Retailers Association (FRA) to resolve the impasse. He added "Talks are continuing tonight [Wednesday].” Numsa's demands included a 20 percent wage increment across the board as well as a 40-hour week with full pay.

The union wanted a one-year bargaining agreement to be put in place beginning on September 1, 2010, and ending on June 30, 2011.

Couple arrested for murdering their baby

A Free State couple has been arrested for murdering their seven-month-old baby daughter, police said today.

Captain Ina Scholtz said a post mortem found that boiling porridge was poured over the infant, from Batho, after the actual murder. Scholz said "Both parents were arrested immediately and appeared in court." The 28-year-old mother and 35-year-old father were denied bail.

It was also discovered that the couple were Lesotho residents and had a four-year-old boy staying with them. Police said the boy had been placed with social workers while his parents were in custody at the Mangaung police station.

State increases wage offer to strikers

Striking South African state workers will vote today on an increased wage offer made by the government to try to end a nearly three-week-old strike, the Cosatu union federation said. The government increased its offer to 7.5% from 7% - compared to the union demand for 8.6% - after being ordered back to negotiations by President Jacob Zuma, under growing political pressure over the stoppages.

Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini said "The offer will be discussed by members today and they will vote on whether to accept the new offer, we don't know what members will do. Indeed there has been a shift and we expect members to look at it critically." The strike has closed schools, prevented treatment at hospitals and harmed investor sentiment in Africa's biggest economy.

However the proposed wage increase, the government raised its offer for a monthly housing allowance to R800. Unions have been demanding R1 000.

Camagwini dumped her manager

Afro-soul singer Siphokazi Buti better known as Camagwini says she needs space and validation – and she will only find it Beyond Destiny.

So she has dumped her manager Stacey Gule, director of Beyond Destiny Entertainment, to manage her own career. Camagwini, says she left them because she needs time to evaluate her life.

She said “our business relationship was not working so we decided that it’s best to part ways. “I don’t feel I need to find a manager right away. I am looking for someone who will understand me and where I am going.”

Zuma intervenes in PS strike

President Jacob Zuma has instructed all the ministers in the public service sector to return to the negotiating table in an attempt to end a 13-day-old national strike.

Zizi Kodwa said "The president gave a mandate to the ministers to immediately go back to the negotiating table." "This follows a meeting the president held with ministers over the weekend, which assessed the strike by public servants and its impact to the country as a whole."

The president had been worried about the long-term impacts of the strike, said Zizi. He was concerned about schooling grinding to a halt and state hospital services being severely disrupted. "It is ordinary, poor people who are suffering, we can't allow the strike to go on unabated," he said.

Zuma was upset about several provinces having to postpone preliminary matric exams because of the strike. "The government set itself goals to increase the pass rate of matriculants... the strike is obviously going to have a big knock in terms of that. "In the interest of the country, the strike must be resolved."

Zuma urged all parties involved to put the interests of the country first and to be willing to negotiate a solution.

Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane announced his 25-man squad for South Africa’s upcoming 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria, yesterday morning at Safa House.

The qualifier will take place at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on the 4th of September and will be Mosimane’s first real test since taking over from South Africa’s World Cup coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.

Workers painted Bhisho red

Thousands of workers painted Bhisho red with their T-shirts and caps as they hurriedly marched from the showgrounds, where they had earlier gathered, to hand a petition to the Office of the Premier.

However instead they had to make do with Transport MEC Gloria Barry. Upon seeing Barry make her way out of the steel gates at the Premier’s Office, the crowd started booing, telling her to go away. After numerous attempts, union leadership managed to bring the crowd under control, only to tell the workers that Kiviet was in Mthatha to receive another petition.

Meanwhile, panic and fear have taken over as hospital dispensaries and pharmacies close down and more workers join the public servant’s strike. Health officials now say patients who are unable to access medicine may develop resistance to drugs when they resume treatment.

Yesterday, patients who had arrived at Frere Hospital to pick up their medication as early as 7am were shocked when they were told to come back after the strike was over.

Police will not join strike

There is no evidence that the police will join the public service strike, Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele said today.

He said "The police are continuing with their daily tasks, they have not put their foot away from the pedal.” After taking a helicopter ride to assess the strike, Cele said he was happy with the conduct of the police since the start of the strike.

"Our members have made major breakthroughs, for instance; the arrest of ten people in the Eastern Cape for murder and a major drug bust,"

He added. "We will continue to protect the rights of the citizens of this country. There is no right above the right to life."

Mariah Carey is four months pregnant

The 40 year old Singer Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon have allegedly told friends how 'overjoyed' they are to be expecting their first child together, despite refusing to publicly confirm the happy news.

A source said ‘Nick has been telling friends how excited he is to be a dad. 'Mariah has tried so hard to get pregnant. She's very excited. She wants to wait as close to full term as possible before going public with the news to her fans.' Nick has refused to be drawn on the pregnancy speculation this week, insisting it is a matter for his wife to tell her fans.

He said "I've said it before and I'll say it time and time again - when my wife feels like talking about whatever she wants to talk about, you will hear it directly from her.'

Parents, please help with exams

The Department of Education sent a plea to the public to help out in Grade 12 preliminary exams on Monday as teachers continue to strike. Communities, parent groups and school governing bodies are just some of the organisations earmarked to assist.

Suren Govender, chief director of the provincial Education Department’s curriculum management and professional development division, said that following a management meeting yesterday, the department decided to proceed with the trial exams on Monday.

He said “We will now need community involvement … we acknowledge that this is a national strike but we should just allow children to write.” Schools in East London and King have mostly suspended classes.

Glyn 'Bongani is settling in well'

Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United central defender Bongani Khumalo is in his second day of trials with English Premiership team Tottenham Hotspur and according to his agent the player has adapted well to conditions in London.

Khumalo is training under the watchful eye of coach Harry Redknapp, currently considered one of the best managers in England and certainly one of the toughest to impress.

The player's representative Glyn Binkin said "Bongani is settling in well at Spurs, but it's only his second day of training. It's going very well at the moment and he definitely looks the part. Physically and technically there's no difference between him and the other players but it is only training. The real test will be in a match situation, which comes tomorrow when he plays his first friendly."

Man, shot & notices five years later

He went about his business for about five years without noticing he had been shot in the head, because he was drunk when it happened. German police disclosed that doctors found a .22 caliber bullet in the back of his head after the 35-year-old went to have what he thought was a cyst removed.

The wound later healed around the bullet and it was not until the man decided to have the lump examined due to recurring pains that the discovery was made. the spokesman added "It may have been a shot fired up in the air which entered his head on the way down."

trufm studios are being renovated. In order to bring the listeners better quality broadcasts, the station needs to keep up and be equipped with the latest technology.

Municipal workers to strike on Friday

The SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) will embark on a strike in Gauteng on Friday in solidarity with striking public servants.

Spokesman Tahir Sema said "The 52,000 members of Samwu in Gauteng would be going on the solidarity strike on Friday.” "Samwu's membership in other provinces are in the process of discussing pledging solidarity."

The union would inform municipalities across the province today of its plans to strike.

Eight people have been arrested

Eight people have been arrested in connection with the murder of an elderly woman and her four grandchildren in Ngqeleni Sibubudu village.

Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said "Police arrested four people yesterday (Monday) and arrested another four this morning (Tuesday) between 03:00 and 04:00. We worked the whole night and the whole day on the case.”

Fatyela said police found an axe, believed to be the murder weapon, and blood-stained clothes allegedly belonging to the victims.
